Even though I can’t remember what I read as I made my way slowly down the west coast of the UK all those years ago, I remember being on a Charles H Hapgood binge during the journeys around the south of England. By the time I made my way to France I started reading through the Hammond Innes titles seriously. His work may be dated, but it completely suited my mood during train journeys and long waits in places I was unfamiliar with. I alternated non-fiction and fiction reading when I was traveling, mostly to keep my brain active.

The last major journey (all the way back north again) was accompanied by a handful of biographies (Peckinpah, Humphrey Bogart, Jimmy Cagney), so there isn’t a clear theme I look for in my travel reading. The most important thing is that the writing is good, the ideas in the book keep me thinking (so I’m not wondering about other stuff) and it isn’t printed in so small a typeface that I get a headache while reading.

    Not very helpful, I know…

    The Anarchist Cookbook. 🙂

Nope just kidding, I cannot read while I am moving, I get really sick. Plus now I don’t fly so it has been forever for me.
I think the last time I flew was when you and I met up in CO.

On my flight over to Canada and back, I was reading book 2 of the Dresden Files. The way Butcher writes makes it easy to pick up and put down, and it’s light so it didn’t confused my sleep deprived brainz. 😉

PS – Hey Hoo’s mom! I hear you missed me! 😀

My favorite type of book to travel with is actually a magazine – does that count? I can’t pay attention on flights so actual reading doesn’t work, so I flip through a magazine and play sudoku. Actually, I have a book of sudoku. So there we go – that’s my favorite book to travel with 🙂
