Getting to Know Lisa Brown Roberts

Please help me give a big Hoosblog welcome to Lisa Brown Roberts!

Lisa Brown Roberts’ attempts to write serious literary fiction to impress peers and professors failed spectacularly, nearly destroyed her sense of humor, but eventually led to writing romantic comedies. Lisa lights her Jane Austen candle every day in gratitude for this miracle.

Her novels The Bookworm Crush, The Replacement Crush, and more, feature adorkable teens navigating family, friendship, and first love, and have earned praise from Kirkus Reviews, Publishers Weekly, and the School Library Journal. Lisa loves hearing from readers who stay up all night reading her books, and blame her for their book hangovers.

Tell us about your book!

The Bookworm Crush is my love letter to bookworms, book bloggers, and the Bookstagram community. I’m so thrilled this book has resonated so much with this community.

I had so much fun creating the heroine, Amy-a shy, smart book blogger, and the hero Toff- a cocky surfing star with a squishy heart of gold—of course. Amy enters a social media contest to meet her unicorn author and enlists Toff to help her “bring the swagger.” Shenanigans and smooching ensue.

The reader love and bookstagram love for this book fills me with gratitude. Making readers happy is the best part of being an author. So many readers have told me how relatable Amy is, and how they feel like they are reading about themselves through her character. That’s the best compliment ever! (Also, they want their own Toff. 🙂 )

Now for the fun stuff!

What’s your favorite genre?

Romance!

Do you read what you write?

Absolutely! I love many romance subgenres: romantic comedy, historical, romantic suspense, paranormal, and more.

I’m finding that I will read almost anything as long as there’s a romantic subplot.

What’s your favorite part about writing?

Writing the “discovery draft” where I’m falling in love with the characters as they fall in love with each other. Everything is fresh and fun. It’s like living inside a movie that I’m directing, and sometimes starring in.

That’s mine too! So many authors say they love editing, but editing my own work is torture for me.

What’s the hardest part of writing for you?

Everything that comes after that magical first “discovery draft!” Revisions always make the book better, but balancing my vision of the story with editorial feedback can be challenging at times.

I agree 100%!

What’s an activity unrelated to writing that you love?

Needlework of all types – crochet, knitting, cross-stitch, embroidery. I’m terrible at it, but I still love it.

I’m really jealous you can knit. I’m constantly using knitting as an example of a skill I’d like to learn and at this point, I’m not sure if I ever will.

Who’s your biggest cheerleader?

I’m fortunate to have a squad of cheerleaders. My husband has encouraged me to pursue my dreams for many years, so he’s the head cheerleader.

Yay! *high kick*

Now I’d like to play a fun little game called This or That. As a writer, I find that a lot of interviews ask the same questions, so I always appreciate sharing something new about myself. I’m super excited about these questions—and I hope you enjoy them!

Introvert or extrovert? Introvert (who can extrovert under duress)

Morning or night person? Morning

Coffee or tea? Coffee (while watching the sunrise)

Sweet or salty? Both, but sweet if I have to choose

Eternal summer or four seasons? Summer forever!

Mountains or beach? Beach, probably because I live close to the mountains

Dogs or cats? Both!

Over 5’5” or under? Under

Left or right-handed? Right

Hoodie or yoga pants? That’s my ideal outfit. 🙂

I admit I’m pretty much living in hoodies and leggings for the past year.
