Getting to Know Kathleen Glasgow

Please help me give a big Hoosblog welcome to Kathleen Glagow!

Excuse me while I fangirl for a moment. Kathleen Glasgow is one of my favorite writers because she’s not afraid to dive deep into the darkest corners of despair. It can sometimes be hard to read, but it’s so important to explore all parts of life. Her first novel, Girl in Pieces, was a NYT best seller, and her second, How to Make Friends with the Dark, was equally compelling.

AND SHE’S HERE ON MY BLOG!

Tomorrow is my birthday, and I may have purposely scheduled this interview for March as a birthday gift to myself. 😛

So without further adieu, please help me welcome Kathleen!

Tell us about your book.

How to Make Friends With the Dark is about 16-year-old Tiger Tolliver and what happens to her after her mother dies.

Tiger’s life changed with a simple phone call. Her mother has died. That’s when darkness descended on her otherwise average life.

Tiger’s mother never talked about her father, and with no grandparents or aunts or uncles, her world is packed into a suitcase and moved to a foster home. And another. And another. Until hope surfaces in the shape of . . . a sister?

Sometimes family comes in forms you don’t recognize. But can Tiger learn to make friends with the darkness before it swallows her whole?

“A rare and powerful novel.” —Karen M. McManus, New York Times bestselling author of One of Us Is Lying and Two Can Keep a Secret

“Stunning and beautifully written.” —HelloGiggles

Breathtaking and heartbreaking, and I loved it with all my heart.” —Jennifer Niven, New York Times bestselling author of All the Bright Places and Holding Up the Universe

Now for the fun stuff!

What’s your favorite genre? Do you read what you write?

YA is my favorite genre, by far, but my other favorite is adult thriller (like Gillian Flynn). I’m also a true-crime fan.

That explains why your books feel the way they do.

What’s your favorite part about writing?

Getting lost in a story and feeling like the world drifts away.

I love that part of writing as well. It’s amazing how the story can completely take over.

What’s the hardest part of writing for you?

Turning off the television, putting down a book, and shoving away my feelings of fear and inadequacy.

<3<3<3 The internet is my biggest distraction, for sure.

What’s an activity unrelated to writing that you love?

I don’t actually know that anything I do is unrelated to writing. Anytime I read a book, or walk my dogs, or do the dishes, or overhear a conversation, I think about stories and characters. A lot of my writing comes from what I see and hear in the world.

The writer brain is never turned off, eh?

Who’s your biggest cheerleader?

My kids. And one, but only one, of my dogs. The other one is perpetually mad that I can’t cuddle all day.

Awwwwwww…

Now I’d like to play a fun little game called This or That. As a writer, I find that a lot of interviews ask the same questions, so I always appreciate sharing something new about myself. I’m super excited about these questions—and I hope you enjoy them!

Introvert or extrovert? Introvert.

Morning or night person? Night person.

Coffee or tea? Coffee.

Sweet or salty? Both.

Eternal summer or four seasons? I live in Tucson, so…eternal summer.

Mountains or beach? Beach.

Dogs or cats? I have both! Plus six fish and two bearded dragons.

Over 5’5” or under? I am 4’11.

Left or right-handed? Right-handed.

Hoodie or yoga pants? Um. I always have a hoodie and comfy pants, but mostly I wear skirts and Converse.

I apologize for responding with surprise at your height because I’m sure you get that all the time, but I didn’t realize you were shorter than I am! (I’m 5’1″.) And I don’t know if I’ve met anyone who owns one—let alone two—bearded dragons. That’s very cool!

Kathleen, thank you so much for spending this time with me and my readers. Readers, you can find Kathleen at these links—and be sure to check out How to Make Friends with the Dark!
